Try this: Reinvent the personal computer, mobile phone and the whole music industry.
This is what Apple did in the last two decades of its existence and how they changed the way people live. Just by looking at the creative minds within the millennium generation, one can see that a new wave of open-minded people had better ways to expressing themselves with the tools Apple engineered.
Co-founder Steve Jobs was one of the reasons why the company named after the fruit became so successful within the few years of its lifespan. He created a whole new company culture with his company motto named “think different”.
Indeed, Apple was the company that thought different when all the other companies only looked ahead to make profit. Starting with the legendary Apple II that eventually ended up as an affordable console and personal computer for families all around the US.
Future all the way!
Apple was a company that focused itself to reinvent for the future and did not hold on anything related to the past. The idea of ditching things because of the believes Apple had were very controversial topics within the tech community.
Looking back at the abortion of the DVD-Drive or the headphone jack, people thought that they would miss these features.
I would suggest you to watch the advertisement of the first iPod Touch revealed in 2007 and compare its shown capabilities with the smartphones of today. iPod Touch Ad 2 ; iPod Touch 1st Gen Ad
I personally find it very interesting to see how much of its shown features have stuck with us through the years. The UX design seems not to be aged at all and the device displays the focus of the company towards functionality and common sense in product usability.
Same goes for the first-generation MacBook Air (A1237) with only three ports (MagSafe not included) available and a design incomparable with other sub-notebooks of that generation because it fitted into an envelope and look very slick.
Steve Ballmer, former CEO of Microsoft, was one of the people who laughed at that product for not having a SuperDrive and the existence of only one USB-A port.
Who would have known that both media access ports were going to become extinct? Maybe it’s a coincidence or a true assumption made from Apple a decade ago.
What’s happening now?
Having a very forward-facing concept of developing products and a modern trend of using wireless products, Apple joined the race of wireless chargers and failed at it brutally by not delivering anything for charging their own products even though an announcement was made last year in front of the public. The reason for the cancelation was that the engineers at the company did not manage to design a device delivering power to at least three devices simultaneously.
According to some reports, the charger started to overheat while charging the devices. It most likely was a challenge because the idea of the AirPower was to charge the Apple Watch alongside two other Qi supporting devices. It’s meaningful to note that both technologies are very different from one another.
To clarify: Apple did not invent the idea of wireless charging at all but tried to create their own version of the existing technology and improve it like the concept of the company maybe would require them to do.
But they failed at it having a forward thinking and fitting idea for their product lineup.
It’s not the first time an Apple product has failed to be released after the announcement of it. Looking at the white iPhone 4 fiasco in 2010, one can draw some parallels. And back then Steve Jobs was still in charge.
Misguidance or physically not possible?
I mentioned the delay of the white iPhone 4 for a reason: Even the best and most idealistic idea can't break the law of physics. In one product the proximity sensors did not get enough light to work appropriately and in another product the coils started to become too hot.
That is why I would say that Apple is a company looking ahead to the future but also has its flaws when looking at the failed development of the AirPower. Needless to say, it was one example how Apple should not lead the future of our product since we saw Apple doing better with the first iMac, iPod or iPhone. It's just not the way Apple does things.
